You finally caught the rodent running around your house or property. Now you just have to figure out what to do with it. If the animal is dead, you don’t want to just throw it in your garbage can and for live rats, you don’t want to simply let them loose. After all, rodents are creatures of habit, meaning it is likely to go right back to where you found it unless you do something about it.



Relocate It
Assuming you used a live cage trap to catch the rodent, you will want to relocate it to another area. If the animal was inside your home, then quickly make any necessary repairs to prevent it from coming back inside. This means sealing up the entry point it used and removing the sources of food that attracted the rodent in the first place. Then, you can release it outside your home. Remember that if you haven’t blocked off access to your home, it will simply return, so be careful with this.

Another option is to relocate the rodent to an area further from your home so it doesn’t come back. There are, however, a few issues with this. It is not always legal to relocate a rodent since it can interfere with the ecosystem in various areas. Because of this, you need to check local regulations before taking this course of action. You should also keep in mind that rodents typically don’t survive when relocated far from their home. They are used to living in a small area and if they aren’t familiar with a new place, they won’t know where to find food, water, or shelter or how to hide from the predators in the location.

A good option if you have caught a live rodent is to contact a wildlife rehabilitator. They will tell you exactly what to do with the animal so you don’t have to worry about breaking local regulations. These professionals will also have the rodent’s best interests at heart so you can feel better about your actions.

Dispose Of It
If the rodent you caught is dead and in a snap trap or has simply died, then you will need to dispose of it. Every area has slightly different regulations for how to do this so you may need to consult your local wildlife management. Depending on where you live, you may be able to double or triple bag the dead rodent and throw it out with your normal garbage or they may instruct your burn or bury the dead animal. Some areas require dead rodents be tested by a local lab or disposed of in a specific location.

Precautions To Take
Whenever you handle a rodent, even indirectly, be sure to wear protective gear including thick gloves. You should never touch a rodent directly because of the risk of germs and disease. Even if the rodent is in a live cage trap, handle it carefully and wear gloves when close as the animal may be scared and try to bite or scratch you. Take extra care when you first find a dead rodent as you won’t be sure whether it is truly dead. The last thing you want to happen is to think it is dead, pick it up, and be bitten.

Clean Up The Area
After you have trapped the rodent and gotten rid of it permanently, your work isn’t quite done yet. You still need to clean up the area where the rodent was. If there were a group of rodents in your attic, you will need to sanitize all the surfaces and check for damage. The same is true of any other location the rodent was, whether it was in your walls or under your porch. Be sure to wear gloves and a HEPA mask while gathering the animal waste and cleaning any bodily fluids associated with dead rodents. If you simply don’t want to deal with the mess yourself or had a large infestation to clean up, you can also hire a professional to take care of it for you. Many companies and individuals who remove rodents will also clean up after them. If they don’t, they should at least be able to recommend a company that will do so.

Prevent New Rodents
Finally, make sure that you don’t have to deal with any more rodents on your property in the future. If the rodents were inside your home, make sure that you have sealed up the hole they used to get inside. Take the time to inspect your house inside and out to ensure there aren’t any other potential entry points. Clean your home inside and out, focusing on removing potential sources of food, shelter, and water. Without food and water, your property becomes much less attractive to rodents, reducing the chances of them making it into their home.
