How Big Do Toronto Squirrels Get?

Canada squirrels are the hyperactive bushy-tailed rodents that are found in almost every corner of the world. These creatures belong to the Sciuridae family of animals, and few other animals that fall in the same category are marmots, chipmunks and prairie dogs.

Integrated Taxonomic Information System says that there are more than 200 squirrel species in the world and they can be divided into three basic types as flying squirrels, ground squirrels, and tree squirrels. These three categories are further categorized into several types such as Black, White squirrel, Rock, Richardson, Franklin, Albert’s, Arctic Ground, Idaho, Arizona Gray, Southern, North Flying, Pygmy, Fox, Douglas, American Red, Grey, Spotted, Antelope, Mountain Tree, and Albino Squirrels.

Now as there are so many varieties of Toronto squirrels, so the size ranges of these rodents also vary from category to category. Studies reveal that the smallest squirrel in the world is African Pygmy Squirrel that can grow around 2.8 to 5 inches in length and their weight can be 10 grams at max. The largest squirrel is Indian Giant Squirrel that can grow as much as up to 36 inches and it can have maximum weight up to 1.8 kilograms.

The Grey squirrels are usually found in North America, and they are well known as medium size Canada squirrels. Experts say that their length can range somewhere between 15 to 20 inches and their weight can be somewhere around 1 to 1.5 pounds. The group of squirrels can be called as dray or scurry. These rodents are quite specific about their territory, and they can even fight to the death to protect their area. On the other side, the mother squirrels are more careful about defending their babies from any danger around.

As the name indicates, tree squirrels prefer to live in the area surrounded by lots of trees; whereas the ground squirrels are more satisfied on the ground where they can dig burrows to live inside. Some squirrels are also found hibernating in their burrows during cold season to stay warm. The flying squirrels prefer to create their nests in the tree holes or can live in the crooks of branches. In order to jump from one tree to another, these flying squirrels simply spread their membranes at muscle areas between their body and legs so that they can easily glide in the air. An adult flying squirrel is capable enough to glide up to 160 feet with ease so they appear like they can fly from one tree to other.

At an average, Toronto squirrels can eat around 1 pound food/ week. Many people believe that squirrels only live upon nuts, but the terrible fact is that some of them can also eat meat and plants. However, they mainly focus on fruits, nuts, seeds, fungi, small insects, young snakes, and caterpillars as well. It means when they are visiting your premises so often; they are enjoying the vegetation or fruits and nuts in your garden. So it is important to execute squirrel removal process as soon as possible.
